From Cruise Attendant to Reefsleep Host: Kenzie’s Great Barrier Reef Career Journey
by Flight Centre Travel Academy on 21-Jul-2026 14:12:12
For many people, working on the Great Barrier Reef is a dream. For Flight Centre Travel Academy graduate Kenzie, it has become the beginning of an exciting career in tourism.
After joining Cruise Whitsundays as a Cruise Attendant in March, Kenzie quickly discovered that a career in travel and tourism could take her further than she imagined. Within just a few months, she progressed into a new role as a Reefsleep Host, helping guests experience one of Australia’s most unique overnight Great Barrier Reef adventures.
Kenzie’s journey is a great example of how the right opportunity, combined with confidence, practical experience and a passion for people, can open doors in the tourism industry.
When Kenzie joined the Work, Study + Play Whitsundays program, she was looking for more than just a qualification. She wanted the opportunity to gain real industry experience, meet new people and begin building a career in a destination she loved.
Her first role with Cruise Whitsundays gave her the chance to do exactly that.
From the moment she started, Kenzie embraced every opportunity to learn. One of her first experiences was training aboard the iconic Camira sailing vessel, where she spent her days on the ocean, exploring the Whitsundays and helping guests enjoy one of Australia’s most famous destinations.
Working in the marine tourism industry gave Kenzie a firsthand look at the variety of career pathways available within travel and tourism, confirming she had chosen the right career direction.
Starting her journey with Cruise Whitsundays
Kenzie interviewed with Cruise Whitsundays and other employers while attending her Sneak Peek Experience, part of the Work, Study + Play Whitsundays program. Cruise Whitsundays is one of the leading tourism operators in the Whitsundays, offering visitors the chance to explore the Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven Beach and the surrounding islands.
Kenzie choose to accept the role and working with a tourism employer like Cruise Whitsundays has meant gaining valuable experience in guest service, teamwork and creating memorable experiences for travellers from around the world.
She quickly discovered that tourism careers are not limited to one role. There are opportunities to continue learning, work across different experiences and progress into new positions as skills and confidence grow.
How Kenzie progressed from Cruise Attendant to Reefsleep Host
Just weeks after starting with Cruise Whitsundays, Kenzie saw an opportunity to apply for the role of Reefsleep Host.
The role was a perfect next step, combining her love of the ocean, hospitality skills and passion for creating incredible guest experiences.
After interviewing for the position, Kenzie received outstanding feedback from the Cruise Whitsundays recruitment team, who described her interview as one of the strongest they had seen! Her success shows the impact that confidence, preparation and real-world experience can have when starting a career in tourism.
More than just a job: friendships, confidence and personal growth
While working on the Great Barrier Reef is an incredible opportunity, Kenzie says one of the biggest highlights has been the people she has met along the way.
Living and working in the Whitsundays has allowed her to build friendships with people who share her love of travel and adventure. The connections she has made have become one of the most rewarding parts of her experience.
She has also developed a new level of confidence through stepping outside her comfort zone and embracing life away from home.
Like many young people starting their careers, moving away from family and living independently for the first time was a challenge. Learning to manage a new routine, work responsibilities and life in a new location has helped Kenzie grow both personally and professionally.
Where can a career in tourism take you?
Kenzie’s journey highlights the incredible opportunities available in the travel and tourism industry.
A starting role in tourism can lead to careers across areas such as:
- Marine tourism
- Hospitality and resorts
- Events
- Airlines and aviation
- Travel consulting
- Guest experiences
- Tourism operations
The skills developed through these roles, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving and customer service, are valuable skills that can open doors around Australia and around the world.
For Kenzie, what started as a Cruise Attendant position has already led to a promotion as a Reefsleep Host and a deeper passion for a long-term career in tourism.
Starting your own Great Barrier Reef career journey
The Work, Study + Play Whitsundays program was created for students who want to combine study with real industry experience.
Students have the opportunity to gain a qualification while living and working in one of Australia’s most iconic destinations, developing the skills, confidence and connections needed to start their careers.
Kenzie’s story is proof that a career in travel and tourism can be more than just a job - it can be an adventure. The entire FCTA crew is cheering Kenzie on as she takes on her next chapter.
You too could find your future workplace being the Great Barrier Reef, a tropical island, an international airport or somewhere else around the world.
