Program Entry and Working in Aviation
This program offers you an amazing start in airline and aviation industry. The Work, Study + Fly program has its own entry requirements — and each employer may also have a few extra criteria to meet. Find out more in the FAQs below.
The Work, Study + Fly program has specific entry requirements, in addition to meeting the standard entry criteria for the Diploma of Travel and Tourism.
Airlines have strict recruitment standards — particularly for cabin crew positions. While requirements vary between airlines, most expect applicants to be at least 21 years old, hold a valid passport, and have 2-3 years of experience in a customer-facing service role.
If you already meet these criteria, you can choose our Direct Airline Pathway, the fastest route into a Cabin Crew role.
If you’re still building experience or need more time to meet airline eligibility, our Aviation Work-Study Pathway is designed for you. You’ll gain hands-on experience working with our aviation partners while you complete your Diploma of Travel and Tourism, preparing you for airline recruitment when the time is right.
- Each employer will have different requirements.
- Most will require you to hold a valid, First Aid Certificate and Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate.
- There is generally a minimum age requirement - some are simply 18+ years of age, some airlines are more restrictive and require 21+ years of age.
- You will be required to be in excellent health, able to pass respiratory tests if required and a proficient swimmer.
- Height requirements differ with each airline for cabin crew roles.
- Customer service experience is required.
- A love for travel and customer service!
Working for our Aviation partners:
After completing 4 subjects towards your Diploma you will have the opportunity to interview for a role with our Aviation partners such as DNATA and Menzies for ground passenger or support roles. You can then continue to work while you complete your final 4 subjects part-time.
Working for an airline:
After graduating your Diploma of Travel and Tourism, successfully completing your interview, assessment centre and finishing your airline training ground school, you will then begin working for your chosen airline.
Our program team will work with you to explore other job opportunities in the industry.
Most students work at airports and connection points across Australia. While your role will be based locally, many of our aviation partners, such as dnata, Swissport, and Menzies, are global companies that work with international airlines. This means you could be representing major carriers like Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Southern China Airlines, Air Canada, or Delta while working here in Australia. It’s a great way to gain international airline experience without leaving the country.
Pay rates vary depending on your role and employer, but here’s a general guide:
Cabin Crew:
You can expect a base salary of around $49,000 per year plus superannuation and allowances. Allowances differ depending on the aircraft type, routes, and overnight stays, and cabin crew typically receive around six weeks of annual leave each year.
Ground Support and Aviation Roles:
These roles are usually paid hourly based on the relevant industry award, with rates increasing as you gain experience, skills, and shift loadings.
Just like any job, time off is generally provided by your employer. Please note that time off work may be quite restrictive during peak holiday periods eg. Easter, School Holidays etc.
We have a range of other job pathways that we will assist you with if you don't wish to pursue a career in airlines or aviation or you are unsuccessful in the interview process.
This program is about experiencing different positions and employers within the airline and aviation industry and we encourage you to take on the position with an open-mind and positive attitude to make the most of the experience you will gain in that position or with the particular employer.
